Quarry Lake: What's New for 2009

Important Notes for the 2009 season:
• Please note our new mailing address: Shakopee – Prior Lake Waterski Assn, P.O. Box 867, Prior Lake, MN 55372.
• Quarry Lake now includes a new bituminous and concrete plank boat launch, similar in quality to what you find at a public Minnesota boat launch created and maintained by the DNR. Our boat launch was paid for and installed solely by SPLWSA, largely through Club volunteer labor and numerous generous contributions made to our 2006 SPLWSA mini Capital Campaign. Thank you contributors, Members, and volunteer laborers! Please see cross-section drawing at bottom of this page.
• Quarry Lake is surrounded by privately owned roads and industrial property. We have permission to enter and exit the Quarry Lake site only via a specific set of private roads. Members entering or exiting the site via any other method are risking trespass prosecution, and also endangering the Club’s future use of the lake. Our Use Agreement with the City can be terminated if we use non-approved private roads to enter or exit the site. Directions to Quarry Lake showing the approved entrance and exit routes are available to Members on our Yahoo Groups site, or by contacting quarrylake1@yahoo.com.
• We will be required to utilize the blue and orange gates again during the 2009 season. Please see “Quarry Lake Gates” tab on this web-site for instructions.
• SPLWSA Directors changed in April 2007 our policy on what boats and engines may be used at Quarry Lake. This new policy becomes fully effective with the 2009 season. Here it is:

Quarry Lake Boats and Engines Policy
Only boats meeting the following requirements may be used on Quarry Lake.  The boat must be 23 ft. or less in length (excluding swim platform), must be manufactured and intended specifically for use in towed water-sports competitions, must be propelled by an inboard four-cycle engine, an outboard four-cycle engine, or an outboard two-cycle engine with three-star or greater environmental rating. The Club authorizes two exceptions to these rules.

1. A safety boat used during approved Show Team practices and Ski Show Exhibitions. The engine or engines for the Safety boat will meet engine requirements described above.
2. The SPLWSA workboat

Boats excluded from use on Quarry Lake include, but are not limited to, all personal watercraft, all boats exceeding 23’ in length, boats not specifically manufactured for use in towed water-sports tournaments, all boats propelled by inboard-outboard engines, any boat propelled by one or more two-cycle outboard engines with less than a three-star environmental rating.

In addition, Boats must fulfill all Minnesota legal requirements including being properly licensed. Boats must also meet Club insurance requirements. These include that the boat must be insured, that the boat insurance include liability coverage with a minimum limit of $500,000, and that both SPLWSA and USA Waterski must be listed as additional insureds on the policy. A certificate of insurance showing that these insurance requirements have been met must be on file with SPLWSA. The Global Marine Insurance Agency brokerage provides low cost boat insurance coverage that meets these requirements.  To learn more about this coverage, please click here www.insuremyskiboat.com
Please contact quarrylake1@yahoo.com if you have questions about this policy.

• There are limited spaces in specified locations in the lake for boat lifts, and limited spaces in specified locations for shored-based boat trailer storage. In 2009, there is a $250 fee to keep a boat on a lift in the lake, and a $100 fee for boats to be stored at the site on trailers on the shore. For more information, please see “Quarry Lake Site Rules” tab on this web-site.
• We are asking all Shockwaves members aged 12 and over, including Quarry Lake Members, to commit to at least 5 hours of volunteer labor again this year. Our responsibilities at Quarry Lake are many, and include mowing the lawn, mending the fence, and maintaining the boat launch and the road into the site. In addition, we need to install, remove, and maintain the slalom courses, docks, Ski Jump and perform other general maintenance—not to mention all the improvements we have in mind.
Many of us are very busy and may not be able to fulfill our labor obligation. As a result, for 2009 we are again offering a ‘buy-out’ option for those who do not want to be held accountable for five hours of labor. This ‘buy-out’ is $100 (or $150 family) and is in addition to the Shockwaves Membership fee. We will use these funds to hire out some of the work.
• WE DO NOT WANT EURASIAN MILFOIL OR OTHER EXOTIC SPECIES TO TAKE ROOT IN QUARRY LAKE. Not only is it against Quarry Lake Rules for you to transport Eurasian Water Milfoil into Quarry Lake, it is against Minnesota Law for you to transport all exotic aquatic species from one lake to another. Please be careful to remove milfoil, other weeds, and other exotic species from your boat PRIOR to transporting it to Quarry Lake. Here is a link to the DNR web-site showing suggested procedures prior to transporting your boat from one lake to another. http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/invasives/preventspread.html Please make sure to review and follow these procedures. If you are not familiar with Eurasian Milfoil and other exotic invasive species, or do not know what they look like, please review this information on the DNR web-site. http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/invasives/index.html
• Please note that we may be pre-empting your Quarry Lake time slots up to three times during 2009.
• We want to make sure that we have communicated to all members that an environmental investigation discovered a small amount of Diesel Range Organics contaminants in Quarry Lake. The Minnesota Department of Health informs us that it is highly unlikely that the amounts measured would pose risk to water-skiers. For a full discussion of these findings and a copy of the letter from the Department of Health, please click on our “Environmental” tab on the Quarry Lake web-page.

Thank you. We welcome comments, suggestions, or questions about these changes. You are welcome to offer comments and suggestions to our Quarry Lake Coordinator or any of our Board members. Please send your comments to quarrylake1@yahoo.com Thank you for helping us keep and improve this great site!
