The Quarry Lake Gates
SPLWSA and Quarry Lake Members will need to enter and exit the Quarry Lake site via two gates. The first is a Blue Gate located at the entrance to the property. The second is an Orange Gate along the north road just past the Bituminous Roadways (BR) plant. Please read these instructions carefully and follow them fully. Failing to do so will cause real problems in our relations with BR and the City, up to and including an inability for us to access the site. Thank you for your cooperation.
Blue Gate: BR has experience vandalism, illegal dumping, and theft. BR has been utilizing the blue gate since the winter months of 2006 in order to prevent future such incidents.
Entering the Site
• BR employees will open the BLUE gate when they arrive in the morning, and close and lock the blue gate when they leave at night. The good news is that in the summer BR employees are there from sunrise to sunset five or six days a week, so the Blue Gate is likely to be open when you arrive at Quarry Lake. If the Blue Gate is locked, it will be locked in a series using both our combination lock and BR’s keyed lock -- such that opening EITHER lock will allow entry to the site. IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT YOU LOCK THE BLUE GATE IN THIS EXACT SAME MANNER. (Please see instructions and photo below). This way, SPLWSA members will be able to get in using the combination, and BR will be able to get in using their keyed lock.
• IF you find the Blue Gate CLOSED when you arrive, WE NEED YOU TO CLOSE AND LOCK IT AGAIN BEHIND YOU – LOCKING YOURSELF IN -- AS YOU ENTER THE SITE. This applies even if more members of your party have yet to arrive. DO NOT LEAVE THE BLUE GATE OPEN OR UNLOCKED BEHIND YOU IF YOU FIND IT LOCKED WHEN YOU ARRIVE. We don’t want people stealing skid loaders while you are out back skiing.
• IF you find the Blue Gate OPEN when you arrive, LEAVE IT OPEN as you enter. If you think some other Club Member may have made a mistake by leaving the Blue Gate open, please close and lock the Blue Gate. (e.g. If there are no BR personnel in sight, and their parking lot is empty). I’d rather be yelled at for closing the Blue Gate unnecessarily than for wrongly leaving it open. Wrongly leaving the blue gate open is a problem.
Departing the Site
• If you find the Blue Gate closed as you exit the site, please close and lock the Blue Gate behind you as you exit, even if more members of your party have yet to depart.
• If you find the Blue Gate open as you exit, please leave the Blue Gate open. Again, if you think someone else may have made a mistake by leaving the Blue Gate open, please close and lock the Blue Gate.
Quarry Lake BLUE GATE Combination Lock Instructions
It is important that you lock the Blue Gate in such a way that EITHER opening the combination lock OR the keyed lock will allow entry. The combination lock should lock the end of the left chain to the beginning of the right chain. The keyed lock should lock the right end of the right chain to the blue gate. Do not lock chains together with one lock.
Please see photograph below.

Orange Gate: There is a second gate, an ORANGE gate, along the north road of the property just to the west of the BR plant. The City wants to utilize this Orange Gate for the same reasons that BR wants to use the blue gate.
The orange gate will also have a combination lock and a keyed lock. The combination lock is our lock, and the keyed lock is the City’s lock. The combination for our Orange Gate lock will be the same as the lock on the Blue Gate. It is okay to leave the orange gate open while you are on-site.
When you are departing the site, CLOSE AND LOCK THE ORANGE GATE if you are the last of your party to leave the site. Last one out needs to lock the Orange Gate, even if you know someone else is planning to come out to the site later that same day. For example, if you are leaving the site, and know that the persons who have the slot after you are coming out to Quarry Lake to ski that day, but they have not yet arrived, we want you to close and lock the Orange Gate anyway.
Quarry Lake Orange Gate Combination Lock Instructions
It is important that you lock the Orange Gate in such a way that EITHER opening the combination lock OR the City’s keyed lock will allow entry. Lock the two locks in a series, just like at a construction site. Please loop the chain around both ends of the orange gate. Lock the shackle of the combination lock both to the shackle of the keyed lock, and to the opposite chain.
Please see photograph below.

How to Open the Combination Locks on the Blue and Orange Gates
1. To Open – turn RIGHT 3 times. Stop at the first number.
2. Turn LEFT one full turn passing the first number to stop at the second number.
3. Turn RIGHT and stop at the third number
4. Turn LEFT until the dial stops
5. Hold dial at stop. Pull lock to open.
6. To RELOCK: Push shackle in, turn dial one full revolution.
BE CAREFUL NOT TO FORGET STEP #4 ABOVE. This is an unusual step, but the combination lock will not open without it.
